Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if it is time?

We have resources devoted to this question here.

When should I schedule a home-euthanasia visit? How do I make an appointment?

When you think this time may be approaching, please reach out via our appointment link to schedule. You may also email, call or text. During regular business hours, we will return your communication within 1 business day (often within a few hours). For availability, scheduling 1 - 3 days in advance is helpful. Though we do our best to accommodate last minute requests, we are NOT an emergency service. We do occasionally schedule outside of regular hours, though we cannot guarantee availability.

Can children be present for in-home euthanasia?

This is a decision for your family. Very young children may have trouble understanding, and it is helpful for you to have a conversation with them before the visit. Please emphasize that this is helping your pet to pass peacefully. It is best not to use the term “put to sleep” as this can be confusing and scary for children. See our page devoted to navigating euthanasia with children.

Can my other pet(s) be present?

Yes! This is another benefit of home euthanasia. Allowing companion/housemate pets to be present can help them to understand the loss and can aid their own grieving process.

Can I feed my pet prior to the visit?

When planning for an end of life visit, if your pet is still eating, it is wonderful to be able to spoil them with their favorite foods. Please keep portions small and save any otherwise forbidden foods (rich treats) until ~1 hour prior to the visit.

Do I need to contact Radiant Heart prior to the appointment?

You do not need to contact Radiant Heart prior the visit. For your convenience, we make all arrangements with Radiant Heart. Cremation costs are included with Madrona fees and should be paid directly do Madrona at the time of service. Some people appreciate looking at their website to learn about their loving work and the beautiful memorial items they offer.

How will my pet be transported for cremation?

We work directly with Radiant Heart, a local Bellingham pet crematory. Depending on your location, the size of your pet, and the timing of the euthanasia, transport can be provided either by the Dr. Claire. Some pet parents prefer to transport their pet themselves when they are ready. We will ask you about this when scheduling or confirming the appointment.
