Therapeutic Laser

Laser therapy, or photobiomodulation, is a way to heal tissues with light. The class 3 laser penetrates tissues and increases cellular energy to speed up the inflammatory process.

In older, immunocomprimised patients, light therapy is an easy way to reduce pain, improve healing, and positively impact quality of life.

Laser therapy is a non-invasive way to manage and treat a number of disease in cats and dogs, including:

  • wounds

  • osteoarthritis

  • infections (oral, ear, skin, and others)

  • intervertebral disc disease (back pain)

  • general pain

1. Pain Relief and Comfort:
By gently penetrating deep into the tissues, this light stimulates cellular healing, reduces inflammation, and promotes blood circulation. Through the power of laser technology, your pet will experience a soothing relief from pain, muscle stiffness, and discomfort.

2. Accelerated Healing:
Time is of the essence during the hospice period. Therapeutic laser promotes cellular regeneration and tissue repair to speed up the healing process, ensuring that your pets experience a higher quality of life.

3. Enhanced Mobility and Function:
Aching joints can significantly limit your pet's mobility, hindering their ability to enjoy their remaining time to the fullest. With laser, we can target joint pain and inflammation, promoting increased flexibility and range of motion to get their quality of life back.

4. Non-Invasive and Gentle:
Therapeutic laser offers healing potential without surgery or medications that may have adverse side effects. This non-invasive treatment option ensures your pets receive the care they need without any added discomfort. The gentle nature of this therapy makes it ideal for pets in hospice, allowing them to experience pain relief without undue stress.

How do laser treatments work?

Laser treatments are typically administered 3 - 5 times weekly and take 3 - 5 minutes per site, depending on the condition and size of area treated. Treatment is not painful, and most pets find the process relaxing.

Madrona Veterinary Housecalls is pleased to offer several options for laser therapy. Dr. McPhee carries a powerful, class 3 laser for in-home treatments. We also offer the MyPet laser for rental. The MyPet laser is a safe, easy to use unit. Treatments range from 3 - 5 minutes per site. Renting a MyPet laser enables clients to repeat treatments daily or even multiple times per day.

What clients say:

Laser therapy has been both effective and convenient for my elderly pup who has severe osteoarthritis, particularly in his hind legs and hips. Though his condition is not reversible, regular use of the laser has resulted in a noticeable increase in his overall ease of movement, especially when he transitions from laying down to standing up. This has been a useful addition to his other treatment modalities (medications, hydrotherapy). As an aside, he also really appreciates the extra head scratches and belly rubs he gets while the laser is being administered!

I can't say enough positive things about Dr. Claire…We called Dr. Claire, thinking it was our sweet Abby-dog's time to go. Instead, Dr. Claire was able to diagnose and treat an underlying infection, which was wreaking havoc on our girl. She used the laser treatment to effectively help close what appeared to be an unhealable wound. Abby is still an old girl, but she is back to her happy self with a good quality of life.
